In Hojo's attempt to artificially create Ancients, Cher was one of the children who had been infused with mako while still in his mother's womb. On the night he turned twelve, he managed to escape from the laboratory through the help and sacrifice of his guard and friend, Edward.

Left on his own and knowing practically nothing about the outside world, Cher begins his journey. To where, he does not know. But he has to move on.

Having no sense of direction particular destination in mind, he goes where the wind takes him.
